Greece: redefining the student map

Investment in PBSA is robust – and growing

In 2008, investment in European purpose-built student accommodation was worth about €0.5bn. In the next five years, investors will deploy more than €12bn across the region.

Students from around the world come to Europe in greater numbers every year. And there are housing shortages everywhere they go – of around 3 million beds in total.

Greece is Europe’s untapped opportunity

Take Athens, for example. It has about the same number of students as Amsterdam. But Amsterdam has 12 times the number of beds for them.

In fact, housing coverage for students in Athens is less than 2%. And since Greece has the highest student population per capita in mainland Europe, that gap is only set to grow.

Crucially, the culture is also changing. Greece is now actively welcoming international students. The legal framework around higher education is gearing up for a major shift, inviting more international institutions.

All of which means now is the perfect time not only to explore opportunities in the Greek PBSA market, but to shape it from the ground up.
